He saw Tricki one day with his owner, Mrs. Pumphrey. James was shocked after seeing Tricky. He was looking hugely fat and had blood-sorted eyes. Mrs. Pumphrey explained that she thought Tricky was suffering from malnutrition, so she fed him some malt, cod-liver oil, and a bowl of Horlicks at night to make him sleep. She also confessed that she fed Tricky some cream cakes and chocolates. Tricki's situation was very bad, so he gave the lady some stern advice. After few days, Mrs. Pumphrey called him and told him that Tricki was refusing to eat his favourite food and was suffering from bouts of vomiting. James already knew that thing and he had made a plan.He knew that only way to fit Tricki was to get him to the clinic. So he went to the lady's house and suggested Tricki be moved to his clinic for two weeks. He shifted Tricki to his clinic. Tricki stared at them with dull eyes. For the next two days, he was only given water as food.

Third day, James led Tricki to the dog's playground and Tricky slowly started following the other dogs. The next day, he started playing with other dogs and started fighting for food and killed rats at night. After hearing that, Mrs. Pumphrey sent baskets of eggs, wine and brandy. Doctor and his friend enjoyed them. After some time, Tricky got very well. No longer was he fat and bloated animal. Then doctor called Mrs. Pumphrey and gave her good news of Tricki getting well. Mrs. Pumphrey arrived at the clinic within minutes and saw him now he became agile and a muscled up dog. James carried Tricky back to the Mrs. Pumphrey's car. After seeing his owner, he rushed to her and licked her. Mrs. Pumphrey thanked the doctor and believed that it was triumph of surgery.

Question & answer :-

× Read and find out (page no.01)

1. Why is Mrs. Pumphrey worried about Tricki?

Ans - Mrs. Pumphrey is worried about Tricky because Tricky refused to eat his favorite food and had bouts of vomiting. She also thought that he is suffering from malnutrition.

2. What does she do to help him? Is she wise in this?

Ans - Mrs. Pumphrey thought he was suffering from malnutrition, so she fed him some malt, cod liver oil, and a bowl of Horlicks to improve his condition. She also confessed that she gave him some cream cakes and chocolates. She doesn't give him any excercise or workout. She is not wise because these things are worsening his conditions without improving it.

3. Who does 'I' refers to in this story?

Ans - 'I' refers to the author of the story, James Herriot.

× Read and find out (page no.03)

1. Is the narrator as rich as Tricki's mistress?

Ans - No, the narrator is not as rich as Tricki's mistress because in this chapter narrator is an ordinary veterinary doctor and Mrs. Pumphrey seems very rich because of her dog expenses and number of servents in her house.

2. How does he treat the dog?

Ans - James Herriot is a veterinary doctor, so he treats Tricki as a patient and also as a lazy and over-weighted dog. He also cuts its food intakes and inspires him to do exercise and work out.

3. Why is he tempted to keep Tricki on as a permanent guest?

Ans - James Herriot is tempted to keep Tricki on as a permanent guest because of the eggs, wines, and brandy which he was enjoying with his friend on Tricki's name. He does not want to lose that luxurious meal he was enjoying on Trickyi's name .

4. Why does Mrs. Pumphrey think the dog's  recovery is a triumph of surgery?

Ans - Mrs. Pomphrey thinks that Tricki's recovery is a triumph of victory because Tricki was very lazy and overweighted and also suffering from bouts of vomiting and malnutrition, but James Herriot cured him without any medical treatment or surgery.

× Think about it ( page no.06)

1. What type of a person do you think the narrator, a veterinary surgeon, is? Would you say he is tactful as well as full of common sense?

Ans - The narrator is a skilled veterinary surgeon who manages Tricki's treatment without unnecessary surgery, focusing on diet and activity change. He agreed Mrs. Pomphrey to hospitalize Tricki which helped in managing his health condition. Instead of keeping Tricky as a permanent guest, he makes a sensible choice by informing Mrs. Pomfrey, which proves him tactful as well as having a brain full of common sense.

2. Do you think Tricki was happy to go home? What do you think will happen now?

Ans - Yes, Tricki was happy to return home with his mistress. Because, when he saw her mistress after two weeks, he rushed to her and licked her with a feeling of love. He also missed his luxurious life and favorite food. And from now, he will never be a lazy dog. He will be always active and play with mistress as well as her servants, which will make James and Mrs. Pumphrey very happy. Although, he will also miss his friends of doctor's clinic.

3. Do you think this is a real-life episode, or mere fiction? Or is it a mixture of both?

Ans - Clearly, the story seems a mixture of fiction and real-life episode because it is arranged in a fictional manner, and there is a possibility that the story can be real. It is usual for a rich person to give his pet good food and comfort, and Mrs. Pumphrey did the same thing, which caused Tricki become a lazy and fat dog. Mrs. Pumphrey is rich, and she also knew Tricki's problems, so she can consult to a doctor or specialist herself then why did she not do so? And one day, James Harriot strangely met Mrs. Pumphrey and had a good conversation about Tricki's body condition without knowing each other which feels like a fictional thing proving it as a mixture of fictional and real life.

× Talk about it (page no.07)

1. This episode describes the silly behavior of a rich woman who is foolishly indulgent, perhaps because she is lonely. Do you think such people are merely silly, or can their actions cause harm to others?

Ans - Yes, in my opinion, many people as Mrs. Pumphrey are merely silly and their actions can cause harm to others. Many of the rich people think that they are very wise and do whatever they want without taking anybody's advice. In this chapter, Mrs. Pumphrey did the same. She fed Tricki whatever she want without taking any advice from doctor about his diet which cause Tricki become a lazy and over-weighted dog.

2. Do you think  there are also parents like Mrs. Pumphrey?

Ans - Yes, there are many parents like Mrs. Pumphrey which feed their dog anything they have without any concern to doctor or a well-knowledged person.

3. What would you have done if you were: (i) a member of the staff in Mrs. Pumphrey's household, (ii) a neighbour? What would your life have been like, in general?

Ans - (i) If I were a servant in Mrs. Pumphrey's house, then I would not have allowed Mrs. Pumphrey to feed Tricki that such things without concerning with doctor, although, I will give him a good diet and inspire him to do workout, which will help him to become a fit and active dog.

(ii) If I were Mrs. Pumphrey's neighbor, then I would have advised Mrs. Pumphrey not to give him food, whatever she wants, give him a balanced diet, and inspire him to do some physical activities like running, playing, and go for a walk. I would have advised her to consult with a good veterinary doctor to get a balanced diet for him.

4. What would you have done if you were in narrators place?

Ans - If I were in narrator's place, I will do the same as James Herriot has done in this chapter, but I would have not enjoyed the baskets of eggs, wines, and brandy on Tricki's name, and I would have given her a stern and strict advice on Tricki's diet and health, which will help Mrs. Pumphrey to manage his physical and mental condition.
