"A Letter to God"
Summary :-
There was only one house in the whole valley, on top of a low hill, where Lencho, a hardworking farmer, lived with his family. From his house, he could see a river and fields full of ripe corn. At that time, the only thing the earth needed was rain. Lencho kept looking at the sky, hoping for it.
One day, he happily told his wife that rain was coming. His wife replied, “If God wills, it will happen.” While the older boys worked in the field, the younger ones were playing near the field. Their mother called them for dinner, and during the meal, big drops of rain started falling. Lencho went outside and enjoyed the rain, calling the drops “silver coins”—big drops worth ten cents and small ones five cents.
Suddenly, a strong wind blew, and large hailstones fell for an hour, covering the field like salt. The corn fields were destroyed. Lencho felt very sad and told his sons that even locusts wouldn’t have done so much damage. He knew they would have no corn that year.
His only hope was help from God. Though he was a farmer, Lencho knew how to read and write. He wrote a letter to God, saying that if God didn’t help, his family would go hungry. He asked for a hundred pesos to plant his field again and survive until the crop came. He addressed the envelope “To God” and posted it.
A postman saw the letter and laughed, then showed it to the postmaster. The postmaster, a kind man, laughed too but was touched by Lencho’s faith. He decided to reply. He collected money from his workers, gave some of his own, and asked friends too. But he could only gather 70 pesos.
He put the money in an envelope with a note signed “God” and sent it to Lencho. The next Sunday, Lencho came to the post office, received the letter, and opened it. After counting the money, he became angry.
He sat at a public table, wrote another letter to God, and posted it. The postmaster opened it and read:"God, of the money I asked for, only 70 pesos reached me. I need 30 pesos more. But please don’t send it by post—the post office employees are corrupt and thieves."
Moral :-
The story teaches us to have faith, be kind, and help others selflessly without expecting anything in return but blind faith can lead to misunderstandings.
